Georgian opposition begins govt. office picket in Tbilisi

15.04.2009

TBILISI, April 15 (RIA Novosti) - Georgia's opposition on Wednesday announced plans to begin round-the-clock protests at the State Chancellery building, where the offices of the prime minister and other state ministers are located.

The opposition, which is demanding President Mikheil Saakashvili resign, is already demonstrating outside parliament, the presidential residence and state television headquarters as protests continued for a seventh day in the Georgian capital.

Earlier on Wednesday, opposition groups wrote a poster-sized resignation letter for Saakashvili and hung it outside his residence with a huge pen ready for him to sign.

"We have prepared this text for Saakashvili. He may come at any time and sign it," said Bezhan Gunava, a spokesman for the Conservative Party.

The poster outside the residence reads: "A statement from Mikheil Saakashvili to the Georgian people - I am leaving my presidential post."

Saakashvili's opponents blame him for dragging the country into a war with Russia over South Ossetia last August, resulting in the permanent split from Georgia of the province, along with another rebel republic, Abkhazia. He also faces criticism for failure to carry out democratic reforms promised after the 2003 "Rose Revolution" that brought him to power.
