ANKARA, April 27 (RIA Novosti) - A senior police
officer and a bystander were killed on Monday during an
anti-terrorist operation in Istanbul in which a suspected
terrorist also died, Turkish NTV reported, citing a security
service source.
Seven police officers and an NTV cameraman were injured in
the shootout, which occurred in southeastern Istanbul at 5:30
am [0230 GMT] on Monday as police carried out 60 raids on
extremist suspects.
"These are extreme leftist, separatist and radical groups.
There are more than 10 detained in the operations. Terrorists
responded by throwing bombs in some places, and seven policemen
were wounded," Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler told NTV.
Guler said the shootout started after the militants in the
house threw grenades at police when they raided the house. He
added that police suspected the militants were planning to
carry out "sensational attacks."
