Chechen president praises police actions in terror attack

GROZNY, May 15 (RIA Novosti) - Chechnya's president said on Friday that organizers of a terrorist attack in the capital planned to spread fear among the Chechen population and praised police officers for preventing mass casualties.

According to preliminary investigation, two police officers were killed and three injured earlier on Friday when a suicide bomber set off an explosive device 500 meters from the Chechen Interior Ministry in central Grozny.

"The terrorists have underestimated the courage, professionalism and the capacity to act decisively in extreme situations shown by police officers, who frustrated terrorists' plans by sacrificing their lives," Ramzan Kadyrov said.

"A decision has been made to confer state decorations upon the deceased officers," the president said.

Militant attacks have intensified in Chechnya since the official lifting last month of the Kremlin's decade-long anti-terrorist campaign in the North Caucasus republic.

Despite Kadyrov's claim last month that the war against insurgents had been won, Russian commanders warned in late April that terrorists were planning a series of new attacks.
