Three civilians killed, one wounded by Afghan soldiers

18.05.2009

KABUL, May 18 (RIA Novosti) - Three civilians were killed and another one wounded on Monday after troops from Afghan's National Army (ANA) opened fire in a market in east Afghanistan, a local police chief said.

The shooting occurred in Jalalabad, the capital of the Nangarhar Province, Gen. Mohammad Ayub Salangi said. He added that three soldiers who opened fire had been arrested.

Local TV channel Tolo said shopkeepers had shut their stalls shortly after the incident and taken to the streets in protest at the civilian deaths.

More than 2,100 Afghan civilians are thought to have died during military operations in Afghanistan last year, 60% of those killed were by militants, and 40% by NATO-led forces, according to official statistics.

Afghanistan's Interior Ministry said Taliban militants attacked a police patrol in the southern Zabol Province on Monday, killing one officer and injuring another one.

Media also reported on Monday that militants opened fire on a convoy, which was carrying the Afghan president's younger brother Ahmad Wali Karzai, near Kabul, killing his bodyguard.

No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
