Below is a summary of events in the Commonwealth of Independent States on June 1:

* CIS observers have declared parliamentary elections in South Ossetia won by the ruling Unity party "free and open"

Armenia:

* Armenia's ruling Republican party won Sunday's municipal polls in Yerevan with 47% of the vote

Azerbaijan:

* Azerbaijan has officially confirmed the detention of two Armenian soldiers for crossing the border

Belarus:

* Russia will not go back on its promise to lend Belarus $500 million, but expects effective steps on the part of its neighbor, Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin

Georgia:

* Tbilisi city authorities said they plan to "disinfect" the Georgian capital's central square following opposition protests that had lasted since early April

Turkmenistan:

* Russia's Gazprom has proposed Turkmenistan reduce either gas supplies to Russia or gas prices, Gazprom's deputy CEO, Valery Golubev, said

Ukraine:

* Gazprom will demand 100% advance payments for natural gas from Ukraine if it fails to pay for supplies before June 7, Russian Energy Minister Sergei Shmatko said
