CAIRO, June 18 (RIA Novosti) - Four Russian students
were deported from Egypt on Thursday, but two others had some
extra time in the country after missing the flight, a Russian
Embassy official said.
He said four of them have left Egypt at about noon local
time.
A spokesman for the Russian diplomatic mission said the
two others did not make it on time because the local driver
taking them from jail to the airport lost his way, causing the
students to miss check-in.
The spokesman added that they would take the next
available flight to Moscow.
The six were detained early on May 27, when Egyptian
authorities held a string of raids on apartments rented by
foreign students in Cairo. About 200 students from different
countries were arrested, including 34 from Russia, mainly from
the North Caucasus.
Most of the detainees were released, but many received
deportation orders for violating visa regulations. Eight of the
14 Russians to be deported flew out of the country on June 9.
Although there was no official statement on the
detentions, local media linked the actions by Egyptian security
agencies with U.S. President Barack Obama's June 4 visit to
Cairo, saying security measures were tightened in the days
leading up to his arrival.
