NEW YORK, March 11 (RIA Novosti) - There will be more than seven billion people on the planet by the end of 2012, the UN said in a revised forecast on Wednesday. The growth will be fuelled mainly by births in developing countries, which will see a rise in population from the current 5.6 billion to 7.9 billion. Population growth in developed countries will grow by approximately 50 million people, to 1.28 billion, but mainly because of the inflow of immigrants from developing countries. The UN Department of Economic and social affairs said that the population of the Earth currently stands at approximately 6.8 billion people. The forecast also predicted that the world's population would reach nine billion by 2050. More news |
