Drunk-driving pregnant teen nabbed again in New Zealand

02.02.2009

MOSCOW, February 2 (RIA Novosti) - Police in New Zealand have again caught a 14-year-old pregnant girl drunk driving, national media said on Monday.

On January 29, the girl was stopped for "driving erratically" in Whangarei, in the north of the country, and found to be six times over the limit. It later turned out that the driver was four months' pregnant. She then provided police with a false name which she had difficulty spelling.

On Saturday she was caught drunk driving again, this time with an alcohol level of more than five times over the legal limit. She was taken to the police Youth Aid section, but fled on the way.

"When they got to Portland, she said she was feeling sick. When they stopped the car she opened the door and took off," the Northern Advocate newspaper quoted a police source as saying.

The girl was caught by police when she turned up at her home on Sunday. She was handed over to social workers, but escaped from them again on Monday, the 3news.co.nz news portal said, citing the chief of the country's Department of Child, Youth and Family Services.

In New Zealand, you must be at least 15 years old to hold a driving license and 18 years old to drink alcohol.
