MOSCOW, February 13 (RIA Novosti) - The mother of a
Russian deserter who recently left his unit in South Ossetia
and fled to Georgia has decided to return home as she has been
unable to meet with her son, a Russian Army spokesman said on
Friday.
Galina Glukhov said from the border between Georgia and
South Ossetia that despite applying to Georgian authorities for
several days to meet with her son, either in Georgia or on
neutral territory, her efforts "have produced no results," Igor
Konashenkov said.
Jr. Sgt. Alexander Glukhov left his unit in South Ossetia
in late January and surrendered to Georgian police, requesting
asylum. He said his actions should not be seen as politically
motivated because he would have done the same had his army
division been deployed near any other foreign border.
